Rumaki

For Māori Medium

Anei he paku whakamārama mo te akomanga reo maori ki tō mātou kura o Te Maunga I Kitea.

Here at Mountview kura we have total immersion classes ranging from new entrance to year 8. All learning and teaching is facilitated in Te Reo Maori, based around Te Ao Maori and tikanga.

Every morning and afternoon we start and finish our day in our school Wharenui. Here tamariki are immersed in karakia, mihi, pepeha, waiata, kōrero pūrakau, kōrero o te whare and kōrero around our tukutuku panels which underpin our school curriculum.

Special Programmes - Rumaki

Mountview School operates a Māori Medium (rumaki) programme, and this is included as a special programme within this enrolment scheme.

Applications for enrolments will be processed in the following order of priority:

  • First priority must be given to students who have been accepted for enrolment in the above special programme(s) run by the school and approved by the Secretary for Education.

  • Second priority must be given to applicants who are siblings of current students.

  • Third priority must be given to applicants who are siblings of former students.

  • Fourth priority must be given to any applicant who is a child of a former student of the school.

  • Fifth priority must be given to any applicant who is either a child of an employee of the board of the school or a child of a member of the board of the school.

  • Sixth priority must be given to all other applicants.

If there are more applicants in the second, third, fourth, or fifth priority groups than there are places available, selection within the priority group will be by ballot conducted in accordance with instructions by the Secretary under Schedule 20 (2) of the Education and Training Act 2020. Parents will be informed of the date of any ballot by public notice in a medium appropriate to the area served by the school.

Applicants seeking second or third priority status may be required to give proof of a sibling relationship.

Proof of residence within the home zone may be required.

Process for Rumaki enrolment

Entry into Rumaki is determined by a Tono process, in which an interview takes place between the whanau, Principal and teaching staff of the Rumaki class.

Priority will be given to

  1. Applicants within the enrolment zone

  2. Siblings of existing students

Rumaki Criteria

•         It is ideal that children enrolling as new entrants must have attended Kohanga Reo regularly for at least 2 two years and/or this is a significant adult who is fluent in Te Reo Māori or Māori is the first language spoken in the home.

•         Children must have a significant understanding of spoken Māori commensurate with the level of instruction in the classroom. An oral language test will be administered to ascertain level of understanding.

•         Children enrolling other than as new entrants must have had a bilingual class experience at their previous school and a significant understanding of spoken Māori or have attended Kura Kaupapa and/or Rumaki classes.
